Sam is 27 years old. He and his family have been part of Down Syndrome Network since day one. In 2002 a group of parents (Sam’s included) of children with Down syndrome got together to discuss the sometimes confusing situations that arise while raising a child with Down syndrome. From that discussion, Down Syndrome Network was formed born.
Sam works hard to has raised money every year for the Buddy Walk. He enjoys going to many of them and especially loved the game truck at the ASU Homecoming Block party, at which DSNetwork’s Buddy Walk took part. Sam and his family benefit greatly from the DSNetwork programs and events.
“Sam loves participating in program events such as the Halloween and holiday parties, ringing in the New Year at bowling parties, parties at Main Event and the pool parties.”, says him mom Mary. “I guess you might say that Sam is a party animal!”
His family is glad to see him get out and participate in all these activities. Sam is somewhat of an introvert and doesn’t spend a lot of time with friends as he prefers to stay home unless there is something to do that he feels is fun. His family is glad that DSNetwork has so many fun events for him, although they know the purpose is for the participants to be socially active, maintain physical and mental well-being. Now that Sam is an adult, he loves being part DSNetwork’s Xcell groups with others his age. He likes making new friends and creating new projects.
His family has many close friendships that were formed among families who are part of DSNetwork. “We gain knowledge from each other and get support knowing that these people are traveling the same journey,” says Mary. “It would be really difficult and time consuming to find all this information and these resources without the help of DSNetwork.”
Sam is so excited the Buddy Walk will be a ride through Zoolights! His goal is the be the top fundraiser so he can ride in a convertible and and have the best view of all the ZooLights. Sam’s family encourages everyone to donate to the Buddy Walk and Sam’s Strides team.
